There are plans to replace five railway bridges crossing Deutz-Mülheimer Straße in the Deutz district of Cologne as part of a major ten-year project. In the first two construction phases, the three over 100-year-old steel arch bridges that form the crossing are being dismantled and then replaced with no less than 16 spannverbund girders. The girders were transported to the construction site in groups of four on specialist vehicles then raised up onto the new supports using hydraulic presses.
By designing the bridge girders as semi-precast elements with prestressed concrete bottom flanges, we managed to significantly reduce the construction time and minimise the girder height.
